Renovation Sports Center USZ Schmelz
1150
Vienna,
Auf der Schmelz 6,
Austria
The Center for Sports Science and University Sports (ZSU) at the University of Vienna, located in the 15th district of Vienna, serves as a central hub for the training of sports scientists. It includes the Institute for Sports and Movement Science (ISBW), the University Sports Institute Vienna (USI), and the Federal Sports Academy (BSPA).
At the location on Auf der Schmelz 6, a versatile sports center is available to students and faculty, which includes six sports halls. These halls not only provide space for academic training but also for physical education lessons for federal schools, voluntary university sports, and sports clubs.
The planned renovation of the sports halls aims to improve the functional aspects of the facilities and bring the halls up to the latest technical and aesthetic standards. The sports functional concept will be revised and restructured during the renovation process. The design of each gymnasium will be tailored to the specific requirements of the various sports and usage possibilities.
Hall 1 – Multifunctional Use
Hall 1 will be designed as a multifunctional sports hall with a focus on dance sports, functional fitness, strength training, therapeutic training, and school sports.
Halls 2 to 4 – Ball Sports and Athletics
Halls 2 to 4 are specifically designed for ball sports such as basketball, volleyball, handball, soccer, and badminton, as well as for athletics. The halls can be divided by partition curtains to allow for the use of different group sizes and sports.
Hall 5 – Climbing and Artistic Gymnastics
Hall 5 is designed to meet the specific requirements of climbing and artistic gymnastics. In addition to permanently installed gymnastic equipment such as parallel bars, beams, and vaulting tables, Airtrack lanes are also available. Furthermore, the hall features a new top-rope climbing wall with adjustable overhangs and LED grips, which are controlled by an app and can store and illuminate climbed or pre-defined routes. Additionally, there is a system board and a bouldering gallery, which can be used for both climbing and bouldering as well as training sessions.
Hall 6 – Multifunctional Use for Ball Sports and School Sports
Hall 6 will serve as a multifunctional space with a special focus on ball sports, school sports, and athletics. The flexible design of the space allows for adaptation to various sports and training formats. The equipment in this hall will be optimized to meet the needs of students, faculty, and external users, whether for classes, training, or competitions. The multifunctional layout of Hall 6 provides ideal conditions for a wide range of sporting activities and makes a valuable contribution to the diverse use of the University Sports Center Schmelz.
Future Prospects and Functionality
The renovation project for the ZSU and these sports halls at Schmelz aims to optimize both functional requirements and aesthetic and technical standards. Through the targeted renovation and expansion of the existing halls, modern, multifunctional training spaces will be created that meet the diverse needs of students, faculty, and external sports users.
