Renovation and Expansion of the Elementary School – A Modern Approach to Historic Preservation

The renovation and expansion project of the elementary school aims to combine historic preservation with modern functionality, creating a respectful and independent solution that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding environment and existing structures.

Key Features of the Project:

• New Gymnasium & Connecting Corridor:
  A compact, clearly structured extension has been designed for the new gymnasium, along with a connecting corridor. This addition forms a harmonious link between the two existing buildings, respecting the historic character while introducing modern elements.

• Redesigned Courtyard:
  The dining hall and multipurpose area, together with the connecting structure, define the newly designed courtyard of the elementary school. Generously opening elements allow the interior to merge with the exterior, creating a positive atmosphere. At the same time, the adjacent secondary school (IBMS) also benefits from the division of the outdoor space.

• Child-Friendly Interior Design:
  The interior spaces are designed with child-friendly proportions in mind, ensuring that break areas, circulation zones, and lounges cater to the needs of young students.

• Accessibility for All:
  A ramp, stairlift, and an additional side entrance with an internal elevator system have been integrated into the design. This ensures that all floors of the listed building are easily accessible, guaranteeing full accessibility for everyone.

• Sustainable Building Services:
  The building services concept respects the existing infrastructure while enhancing the new construction. A new heat pump system for heating and cooling, coupled with a high-efficiency ventilation system with heat recovery, ensures energy efficiency. Additionally, solar control glazing, shading devices, and a well-insulated building envelope help prevent summer overheating, making the building more sustainable.
