The project aims to create a respectful and independent solution for the preservation of the listed building by taking the existing structure and surroundings into account. The new construction of the gymnasium, including a connecting corridor, is designed as a compact and clearly structured extension. This new building forms a harmonious connection between the two existing structures. The positioning of the building creates clearly zoned and high-quality outdoor areas that benefit both the elementary school and the adjacent secondary school (IBMS).

The dining hall and multipurpose area, together with the connecting structure, define the newly designed courtyard of the elementary school. Generously opening elements allow the interior to merge with the exterior, creating a positive atmosphere.

The interior convinces with child-friendly proportions in the lounge, break, and circulation areas. Accessibility is ensured through measures such as a ramp, a stairlift, and an additional side entrance with an internal elevator system that connects all floors of the listed building in the elementary school area.

The building services concept refers to the existing infrastructure and is extended in the new construction with an additional heat pump for heating and cooling, as well as a ventilation system with a highly efficient heat recovery unit. The summer overheating is mitigated by the use of solar control glazing, shading devices, and a well-insulated building envelope.
