The former administrative building of the Sophienspital in Vienna has been converted into a residential complex with additional shared facilities.
The existing building was comprehensively refurbished and extended to create modern apartments, including a new two-storey rooftop extension and a medical practice on the ground floor.
Within the central courtyard, the former annex was demolished and replaced by a new five-storey residential building. This new structure accommodates a multi-purpose sports hall on the lowest level and a rooftop terrace with raised garden beds for communal use on the top level.
By limiting the new building to five storeys, the horizontal line of the existing cornice was maintained, preserving the urban character of the ensemble.
Despite their courtyard location, all apartments benefit from attractive views of surrounding green spaces: towards Sophienpark, the access balconies facing the courtyard, and beyond the southern boundary to the park of the Lazarist Church.
