Castelligasse Middle School (Viktor-Christ-Gasse)

1050

Vienna,

Castelligasse 9,

Austria

As part of the competition, a future-oriented concept was developed for the renovation, expansion, and attic conversion of the general compulsory school located at Viktor-Christ-Gasse / Castelligasse in the 5th district of Vienna.
The goal was to create a modern educational building that unites the existing and new structures into an architectural whole while respectfully preserving the historical character of the existing buildings.

Urban Design & Architecture

The plan aimed to largely preserve the structure of the two existing school buildings – on Castelligasse and Viktor-Christ-Gasse – and complement them with a connecting new building.
This new structure spans the former parking area and forms a coherent ensemble together with the existing wings. The characteristic street-facing façades remain intact in appearance.
The new attic floor was conceived as a recessed storey, creating a unified and modern silhouette in combination with the new construction.

To the west, the design opens onto a quiet inner courtyard with mature trees, providing an outdoor area for the ground-floor learning clusters.

The façades of the existing buildings are to be thermally renovated and redesigned with white textured plaster and new windows featuring operable transom sections.
Generous, planted terrace areas on the roof are also planned, offering additional green open spaces.
