PROJECT
Groundbreaking: New Psychiatry Building at Klinik Favoriten
The groundbreaking ceremony for the new psychiatry building at Klinik Favoriten marks a significant milestone in the further development of the Vienna Health Network (WIGEV). At the same time, the project coincides with the 40th anniversary of the existing psychiatric facility, which has undergone fundamental changes in the understanding and treatment of mental illness since its establishment in 1986.
F+P ARCHITEKTEN ZT GMBH has been commissioned as general planner from the detailed design phase onwards to further develop the project. The aim is to create a forward-looking infrastructure that goes far beyond functional requirements and understands architecture as an integral part of modern therapy.
Architecture in Service of Therapy
The design places equal emphasis on the needs of patients in exceptional psychological situations and those of medical and therapeutic staff. In contemporary psychiatric facilities, retreat, activation, movement, and social interaction are essential components of the architectural concept. Open spatial relationships, visual connections, and high-quality outdoor spaces promote orientation, communication, and therapeutic processes.
Our architectural concept specifically addresses these requirements:
- clear functional organization across five levels
- spatial separation of child and adolescent psychiatry from adult areas
- outpatient department and day clinic located on the ground floor
- generous open spaces, including landscaped roof and activity areas
Expansion of Capacity
The new building significantly expands treatment capacities:
- a total of 120 beds (previously 44 beds)
- including 40 places in a dedicated child and adolescent psychiatry unit
With approximately 1,000 inpatient admissions per year, the project highlights the growing importance of a high-performance clinical psychological care system.
Part of a Comprehensive Site Development
The new psychiatry building is part of a broader modernization of the Klinik Favoriten site. Additional completed and planned projects include:
- the newly opened central laboratory
- Pavilion G1 for breast health and radiology
- the planned central emergency department
The completion of the new psychiatry building is scheduled for 2029.
