Competition Rudolfinerhaus

The Rudofinerhaus Privatklinik, a large private hospital in Vienna, requested the following improvements to their estate:

• Enhancement of the main entrance area and forecourt
• Relocation of the nursing training campus
• Improvement of the patient rooms

Our design proposed a streamlining of entrance routes at the existing main entrance – the main access road is retained and emphasised by a new open and welcoming reception hall protected from wind and rain with a broad canopy outside.

A new Nursing Education centre and administration offices will be located in a new-build roof extension. Spacious, naturally lit informal gathering areas and roof terraces promote communication and networking between students and teachers.

On Billrothstaße a new modern entrance hall for the Nursing Education centre on the upper floors above the hospital clinical areas is proposed, separated from the patient and visitor entrances. This new west facing entrance raises the profile of the hospital in the street with its clean and modern design and materials. A second entrance is provided via the eastern staircase in the Wilczektrakt providing the hospital with additional operational flexibility.

The design of the refurbished wards in the Wilczek wing meets today’s patients’ demands for medical and hotel comfort: timelessly modern and comfortable rooms with a hotel ambience are created. Generous rooms with spacious bathrooms and inviting balconies offer optimal conditions for patients to recover quickly. On the south side of the Wilczeck wing all rooms will be extended towards the park, making best use of the permitted development volume set by the city zoning authority. These new larger patient rooms feature south-facing balconies and loggias enjoying views over the park, all protected from the sun by adjustable brise-soleil louvres.

The park to the south of the Wilczek wing is to be included in the recovery process as a newly landscaped Healing Park.  New pathways and planting will provide enjoyable space for relaxing and recuperation, protected by sound and privacy separation from the nearby Billrothstraße.
