Competition

WINNER! 1st Place Umweltbundesamt Bad Elster (DEU)

Feb 2025

We are excited to announce that we have won 1st place in the competition for the new laboratory site of the Umweltbundesamt in Bad Elster (DE). This forward-thinking project involves the expansion and construction of state-of-the-art laboratory and office spaces, specifically designed for the needs of environmental research in the field of “drinking and bathing water hygiene.”

At the heart of our design is the sustainable and flexible use of the new research facility. It is optimally prepared for both current and future challenges in environmental research. We have placed particular emphasis on the building’s high adaptability, ensuring that future functional changes can be seamlessly integrated. Additionally, we considered the specific needs of the various laboratory units to create a productive and efficient working environment.

The new building combines cutting-edge technology with innovative, energy-efficient solutions that will reduce the ecological footprint of the Umweltbundesamt location in Bad Elster. Sustainable measures include:

  • Facade greening to improve air quality and provide thermal insulation
  • Energy generation through vertical facade and horizontal roof photovoltaic modules
  • Surface water utilization to reduce water consumption
  • Geothermal energy for efficient heating and cooling of the building
  • Use of evaporative energy to further conserve energy

With this project, we are making an important contribution to a sustainable and environmentally conscious architecture in Germany. We look forward to realizing this significant initiative and paving the way for a sustainable future in environmental research.
